After returning to India in 1915, Gandhiji came in contact with reputed Congress leader Gopal Krishna Gokhale. He used to raise his voice in the Indian National Congress for the interests of the general public.

In 1917 and 1918, Mahatma Gandhi performed the Champaran Satyagraha in protest against the cultivation of indigo and non-food items rather than food. After this, Gandhiji, along with his followers, gathered people from all over the country and started the non-cooperation movement, emphasizing on non-violence. He emphasized to the Indian citizens to boycott foreign goods and adopt indigenous things. Gandhiji's popularity had reached a peak throughout the country.

Pakistan was formed on the night of 14 August 1947 and Indian independence was declared at midnight of 15 August 1947. Within a year of independence, a Hindu nationalist named Nathuram Godse shot and killed Gandhiji during a prayer meeting on 30 January 1948.
